House Republicans roll out health insurance alternatives
WASHINGTON - Small businesses would have an easier time banding together to offer insurance to employees. Consumers could cross state lines to buy coverage. There'd be no big government expansion.

Half of US kids will get food stamps, study says
CHICAGO - Nearly half of all U.S. children and 90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps at some point during childhood, and fallout from the current recession could push those numbers even higher, researchers say.

Obama's back-to-school speech inspires some kids
PHILADELPHIA - On the very first day of the school year, 12-year-old Mileena Rodriguez was reminded by President Barack Obama himself that hard work can take you places.Mileena listened to Obama's plea to study hard and stay in school Tuesday, watching along with several of her classmates at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School and students across the country. For all the hubbub among adults over the back-to-school speech, many youngsters took the president's message to heart.

    Boy, did the 1970s ever need Farrah Fawcett. Watergate and the Nixon resignation, soaring crime rates and gas prices - bad news everywhere - had the nation in need of a tonic, or a diversion, which is almost as therapeutic. Who could have guessed it would come in the trim form of a Texas blonde with a no-quit smile? That would be Farrah Fawcett, or Farrah Fawcett-Majors, as she called herself in her prime. (Not that there was ever a Farrah Fawcett Minor.) (See the 1976 TIME cover Charlie's Angels.)

    Veteran sportscaster-actor Gil Stratton dead at 86
    Veteran U.S. actor and legendary sportscaster Gil Stratton, remembered for his signature line, "Hi folks, time to call 'em as I see 'em," and for roles in such movies as "Stalag 17" and "The Wild One," has died at age 86.
