  • Gore: Polar ice may vanish in 5-7 years
COPENHAGEN - New computer modeling suggests the Arctic Ocean may be nearly ice-free in the summertime as early as 2014, Al Gore said Monday at the U.N. climate conference. This new projection, following several years of dramatic retreat by polar sea ice, suggests that the ice cap may nearly vanish in the summer much sooner than the year 2030, as was forecast by a U.S. government agency eight months ago.   Nations:Greenland Denmark   People:Al Gore   Activities:Copenhagen Climate Meeting   Source:(AP)   2009-12-14

    Tense atmosphere clouds climate talks
COPENHAGEN - The atmosphere at the U.N. climate conference grew more tense and divisive after talks were suspended for most of Monday's session - a sign of the developing nations' deep distrust of the promises by industrial countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions.   Nations:Denmark Norway Canada Algeria Brazil Switzerland   People:Gordon Brown Barack Obama Al Gore Wen Jiabao Steven Chu   Activities:Copenhagen Climate Meeting   2009-12-14

Developing countries boycott UN climate talks
COPENHAGEN - China, India and other developing nations boycotted U.N. climate talks on Monday, bringing negotiations to a halt with their demand that rich countries discuss much deeper cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions.   Nations:Denmark India Algeria Switzerland Netherlands Australia   People:Gordon Brown Barack Obama Steven Chu   Activities:Copenhagen Climate Meeting   Source:(AP)   2009-12-14

Climate activists unfurl Sydney Opera House banner

The Top 10 Political Scandals of 2009
It might not have reached the heights of the Watergate and Lewinsky years, but the political scandals of 2009 had something juicy for everybody. Republicans went for sex, Democrats for money, and former Gov. Sarah Palin simply bailed out on Alaska. But for sheer bizarreness, the award has to be split between the state dinner gate-crashers and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was impeached for trying to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat--before quitting and winning his own seat on The Donald's 2010 Celebrity Apprentice.   Nations:U.S. Denmark   People:Sarah Palin Christopher Dodd Barack Obama   Activities:2009 White House Party-crasher Blagojevich Corruption Case 2009 Sanford Sex Scandal 2005 Hurricane Katrina 1972 Watergate Crisis   2009-12-14
